Conservators from the Getty Conservation Institute joined archaeologists representing the Central American country of Belize to restore Xunantunich, an ancient Maya city inhabited from 700 to 1000 A.D. The conservation team explored ways to preserve archaeological sites in humid climates. They discovered methods for conserving decorative and architectural stone, stucco and mortar.

These steps lead to the north side of the Castillo. Settlements beyond this central area lie hidden beneath the cover of a tropical rain forest.
