A team of ancient
artisans created this wall painting. Stonecutters hewed the limestone
burial chamber. Masons covered its walls with plaster. An apprentice and
a master painter sketched each figure. A sculptor carved the sketch in
bas-relief. And, another artist painted the figure.
Before conservators
from Getty Conservation Institute and the Egyptian Antiquities Organization
arrived in 1986, one-fifth of the wall paintings deteriorated. Over the
years, sodium chloride penetrated the plaster and the limestone causing
the paint to erode from the surface and the plaster to slough from the
limestone.
