By the 14th century A.D., Charles the IVth made St. Vitus Cathedral the political and religious center of Europe. Located at the heart of Prague Castle, The Last Judgement mosaic decorates the Golden Gate of the Cathedral. During 1992, scientist and conservators from the Getty Conservation Institute joined a team from the Office of the President of the Czech Republic to preserve the 628 year-old mosaic.

Two million people visit Prague Castle every year. Czechs continue to worship at St. Vitus Cathedral, but the only congregants able to admire the splendor of the mosaic were contemporaries of Charles the IVth.
